As mobile device makers are becoming more and more competitive, the second generation YotaPhone is stepping up and making waves. This phone is being launched in the United Kingdom and designed with a larger screen, more powerful processer, and a full, touch e-ink display.
Yota Devices is manufactured by a Russian smartphone maker, which is now selling the dual screen YotaPhone in the US for the equivalency of $871.96 US dollars. This launch comes ten months after the first YotaPhone was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress.
Similar to the first generation phone, this new YotaPhone boasts a traditional smartphone display on the front and on the back, an e-ink display that is similar to a Kindle e-reader. The e-ink display, which is always on, makes it possible for the user to receive notifications along with other types of critical information, even when the main screen is in standby mode.
One difference between the two phones is that this new one has a slightly larger size, which includes a 5-inch high definition display opposed to the 4.3-inch screen from the first phone. With this, users can look at photos, browse the internet, watch videos, and play games easier.
Another change for the new YotaPhone is that the 4.7-inch e-ink display is fully-touch responsive. With the first generation phone, an individual was required to tap and swipe a panel located beneath the display in order to flick between screens. With this new design feature, users have the ability to respond to emails and texts immediately.
This feature also makes it possible for a user to accept or decline a meeting or other invitation, as well as post to different social media sites without the need to wake up and activate the colored display.
In addition, virtually any Android application can be used on the e-ink display. This includes messaging applications like WhatsApp, e-reading applications to include Amazon’s Kindle, and music-streaming applications such as Spotify. Users are also able to grab things like a map and then preserve it on the e-ink screen, a capability even if the phone battery dies.
As part of the second generation YotaPhone offer is a Smart Power Mode. With this, a user can turn off the energy-saving color screen while performing tasks like making or answering calls on the display that is always on in order to save battery life. This phone also provides more than 50 hours of battery life when reading things on the always-on screen.
According to Vlad Martynov, CEO of Yota, this technology constitutes a new species of mobile device, not only by adding a power efficient electronic paper display but also by creating two unique screens that work hand-in-hand seamlessly.
This new YotaPhone is extremely lightweight, relatively slim, and offers strong and durable Gorilla Glass for both screens. Additional features include wireless charging, near-field communication, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.2 Ghz quad-core processor with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage, a front-facing 2MP camera, 8MP rear camera with LED flash, and 4G connectivity.
